Moreover, no clinical studies have shown its benefit in the treatment of Candida infections, weight control, or oral health. Nonetheless, the benefits of Lactobacillus reuteri supplementation are worth looking into.
Although this bacteria is commonly used as a beauty supplement and increases vitamin D levels, it has many other beneficial effects. Studies show that L. reuteri may reduce cholesterol levels by inhibiting the absorption of bile. Besides, it also increases blood levels of vitamin D3. The following are some of the health benefits associated with L. reuteri. However, most of these benefits are still controversial.
A study of several strains of L. reuteri bacteria inhibited in vitro growth of numerous enteric pathogens. Moreover, it could produce vitamin B12 and folic acid. These probiotic bacteria are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Nevertheless, research is required to confirm the potential benefits of this dietary supplement. So, before you buy it, be sure to read the labels carefully.
A study of Pylopass(TM) containing L. reuteri DSM17648 has shown that the product reduces a load of Helicobacter pylori in patients with H. pylori infection. Although the study was conducted for longer periods than most previous studies, it was impossible to compare Pylopass with placebo in terms of overall gastro-symptom severity.
Pigs have also responded positively to L. reuteri dietary supplements, and research has demonstrated that it is possible to enhance the pig’s performance. The supplementation of L. reuteri in formula-fed piglets has increased ADG and improved weight gain. The supplements did not affect feed conversion, however. They were also beneficial for pig performance in a simulated natural environment.
The study also found that the Lactobacillus reuteri strain GMNL-263 improved insulin resistance and alleviated hepatic steatosis in rats. Lu YC, Chang WT, and Huang JS studied the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri in diabetic rats. Furthermore, the supplement inhibited the growth of Trichophyton tonsurans.
Treatment of ulcerative colitis
There is considerable evidence that a probiotic supplement containing L. reuteri may improve the treatment of ulcerative colitis. Researchers have studied mice treated with DSS and Candida and found that both types of bacteria increased the production of proinflammatory cytokines. In contrast, mice treated with Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 had significantly lower proinflammatory cytokines. In addition, mice treated with L. reuteri RC-14 had decreased inflammation and gut leakage, a common complication of ulcerative colitis.
In addition to preventing necrotizing enterocolitis in newborn rats, L. reuteri has increased the proportion of Foxp3+ Treg cells in the intestine. Further, the strains R2lc and 2010 have shown that they can increase the number of Foxp3+ Treg cells in the intestinal wall. They also inhibit IL-12 production from DCs, an important signal for treating ulcerative colitis.
